The kids enjoy themselves at the Army Open House!

NS45 Showcase To mark 45 years of National Service (NS), the Army Open House will include the NS45 Showcase. Based on the theme Celebrating 45 years of National Service: From Fathers to Sons, the showcase will feature multimedia displays that bring NS history to life. With Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) volunteers on hand to explain the exhibits, visitors will journey through NS from the passing of the NS Bill to what the SAF is like today.

Visitors will first walk through a time tunnel that parallels the progress of Singapore's transition from 3rd World to 1st with the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF's) development from the 1st to 3rd Generation force. In the tunnel, visitors can relive significant historical moments of NS, and learn how NS has been vital to Singapore's progress.

The NS45 Showcase concludes by recognising the sacrifices and contribution of NSmen. NSmen who have participated in major military operations will talk to visitors about their operational experiences. A multimedia mural presentation will give recognition to NSmen and NS units for their service.

Strength

Whether we regard difficulties in life as misfortunes or whether we view them as good fortune depends entirely on how much we have forged our inner determination. It all depends on our attitude or inner state of life. With a dauntless spirit, we can lead a cheerful and thoroughly enjoyable life. We can develop a “self” of such fortitude that we are able to look forward to life’s trials and tribulations with a sense of joy.

Visit to the Istana

The state seal on the main gates to the Istana.

Istana opens its gates to the public (Chinese New Year's, Labor Day, National Day, Hari Raya Puasa, and Deepavali).

Past Sunday was Labor Day, so we went to the Istana to check out the beautiful grounds for ourselves.

For SGD2, you can buy a ticket to enter the Istana and see the artwork and many gifts presented to the Prime Minister and President of Singapore. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed. Free admission for Singaporean and Singapore PR, for foreign there will be charged SGD1 to enter the Istana grounds. All money collected from visitor entries is donated to charity. We waited in line for about half an hour to enter, and then had to go through security. Not all of the estate is accessible to visitors, but there is plenty to see and enjoy.

Apparently one could see out to Indonesia on a clear day from the Istana before all the tall buildings went up in Singapore. The next chance to visit the Istana is on National Day. If we get a chance to come back, we're definitely bringing a picnic.
